The Clue of the Maze: 70 Daily Readings for Conquering Doubt. 70 brief readings to encourage believers to overcome doubts about the Bible and God’s involvement in their lives. This unabridged, fully Updated for Today’s Reader edition includes three updated Spurgeon sermons on doubt. From Mr. Spurgeon's Preface: “Doubt darkens and chills the day….Only sickness and weakness can be found in this cheerless atmosphere of skepticism. Spiritually healthy people love the fresh air of the high mountains of truth. The paragraphs of this little book are not intended to win an argument. It is not my goal to convince an opponent, but to help a friend. The way I have personally worked my way through the labyrinth of life to this point may be of helpful interest to others who now find themselves living in a maze. I hope some brother or sister in Christ may find help to fight their doubts and gain strength. Let no one’s heart fail them, because the widespread disbelief we see today is only a shadow of the mind. Face it, and it will fly away. A great poet coined the expression, ‘Honest Doubt.’ How intensely has the world clung to it. Modern unbelief is so short of substance that it has seized the name, and, in season and out of season, it has advertised itself as Honest Doubt, because it desperately seeks respectability. Weak as our voice may be, we lift it on behalf of HONEST FAITH.”

Reviews

All of Grace. I had one other copy in the past that I gave away, and it was so hard to read. Tiny text, large margins. This one is very easy to read, and could even be easier to read for people with eyesight issues. And although my last copy was unrevised for modern English, I am grateful that I can breeze through this. Some might feel a bit uptight about revising this so it’s easier to read, but perhaps you have forgotten what Spurgeon wrote in the first chapter. That it might be accessible to those with much or little education. This fits that spot in 2021. Awwd

All of Grace. This tool is being used in our Sunday school adult class. Everybody is enjoying the book. —TU

All of Grace. All of Grace reveals a love of God and Spurgeon's sharing of Christ's love for his readers. Roger McReynolds does an excellent job of updating the old English linguistics into easy to read language for the modern reader. He does this with the heart of one who wishes not to alter the meaning and impact of Spurgeon's work in any way. A great handbook for people who appreciate Charles H. Spurgeon's sermons and for giving to new or about to be new believers. —Digs G

All of Grace. Another gem by the Prince of Preachers! Charles Spurgeon presents the work of the Trinity in saving sinners. This book has a decidedly evangelistic tone, as the preacher addresses the reader in the imperative saying things like, “Come and see,” “Now look at this,” and “Listen to me.” I believe this book would be profitable reading not only for unsaved individuals, but for someone who is a new believer, someone who’s unsure if he’s saved, someone who wants to understand how one is saved, or someone who’s struggling with a sense of guilt or unworthiness before God. It’s also a great little book to reaffirm and remind every believer of all that God has done for him to bring about his salvation and to keep him in the faith. Topics addressed in this brief work include: grace, regeneration, justification, faith, repentance, sanctification, Christ’s intercession, and the preservation of the believer. Spurgeon’s skillful use of illustrations helps the reader in his understanding of these truths. In All of Grace Charles Spurgeon’s desire is to help the reader to see that he or she can and must be saved only by God’s grace, that by His grace we are made holy, and by His grace we will persevere until the end.—Linda G

All of Grace 16-point Large Print paperback edition. Great book, easy to understand and read. For new believers, Charles Surgeon's classic really helps open the door to understanding. The large print is very easy to read and the content clear, simple, yet profound. —POF

According to Promise. If you were to tell someone about the unique double decker bus passing by, the words you choose and the response received will be far different than if you were to shout out a warning to someone about to be hit by the same bus. Whether intentionally or inadvertently the delivery of a message can help or hinder ones understanding of and response to that message. Roger McReynolds has, in my opinion, done what he set out to do, which he states in his Biography section: “The editor’s job is not to “correct” the writers’ views, but to represent them fairly and accurately.” In According to Promise Roger has taken the message of the famous London Preacher Charles Spurgeon who lived in the 1800s and provided a literary transition to a book that can be read as if it were a message being preached today from the local church down the street. The intended message by Charles Spurgeon comes across seamlessly without the mental sidetracks that are caused by the changes in the English language since it was first published over 100 years ago. The message? One aspect of it you will read is the following, “Furthermore, it is a charming thought that our good God intentionally gives us promises of good things that we may enjoy them twice. We enjoy the promises first by faith, and then by their fulfillment.” Like the message from your doctor that the life threatening cancer no longer riddles your body and you have the promise of life to come. You haven't yet lived your future, but you anticipate and look forward to it. Read this book to get a better understanding of what you can expect based on your faith and where it is placed, knowing it is According to Promise. —Tom W

According to Promise is about God’s promises and how we can trust Him to fulfill them. I was thoroughly encouraged to take God at his word as I read this beautiful book. Each chapter is a perfect length to read slowly and meditatively and dwell on the promise of God. This is not so much a theological teaching book about each and every promise of God, but a devotionally encouraging book about trusting God’s promises. Here are a few quotes that really meant something to me.

“Water will naturally rise as high as its source, but no higher. What begins with human nature will rise to human nature; but it cannot reach to the divine nature.”

“Salvation is by the grace of God from first to last, and that where God has given his grace he does not take it back—because ‘the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.’”

“The truly happy person is the one who believes the promise, and feels assured of its personal fulfillment in due time, and leaves everything else in the hands of infinite wisdom and love. Such hope will endure trials, conquer temptations, and enjoy heaven below.”

“Our tongues can outrun our hands…. His most ancient promise is still fresh in his mind; and he means it now just as much as he did when he first spoke it.”

“He who has gone to prepare heaven for us will not leave us without supplies for the journey there.”

One last one to encourage you: “Oh tempted brother, oh discouraged sister, there is a word of the Lord waiting for you! As the manna fell early in the morning, ready for the Israelites to gather as soon as they rose from their beds, so the promise of the Lord waits for you to come and gather it.”

The only Spurgeon exposure I had leading into this book was quotes from friends and preachers. Getting to sit down and really dive into his writing was a real treat.—Drew F

According to Promise is amazingly easy to read. It encourages, even demands that oneself examine one’s own faith regularly. It revealed to me how close to the truth one can be but still be an eternity away. It presents a sobering call to be introspective and not circumvent the real question of inner motivation and allegiance when living out one’s faith. According to Promise helped me to realize that the promises of God are His great plan to keep us pointed to Him lest we forget who all these great things provided are actually from. I would recommend this to everyone, no matter if you are solid in your faith, or stand in the midst of sea of questions.—Robert P

Peace & Purpose in Trial and Suffering. Another gem by Charles Spurgeon. He never misses the mark! Never! Every single thing I have from the pen of Spurgeon is just exquisite. I get my hands on everything I can by him. Jeff F
